The basic role of the official can be broken down into three simple words – safe, fair, respect.

Welcome to the 2021/2022 Season.

Officials Information

After a year that saw Covid 19 responsible for cancelling most of the season, I hope you are all well rested and ready for an exciting year officiating with Semiahmoo MHA. We’re all hopeful that this year will bring back a return to what we’ve come to know as “normal” in past seasons.  We do know there will continue to be a strong focus on the health and safety of players, coaches and officials and look forward to a successful year!

New Officials

We have gone through a year with only a few new officials who certified from last year.  Moving forward, we anticipate needing approximately 20 new officials this year. If you know someone interested in becoming an official, please have them e-mail Semiahmoo Referee in Chief, Phil Linklater at philiplinklater@gmail.com to be put on the list.  The certification process for new officials under 16 is different and I will be directly contacting new officials as to where and when the certification clinic will be.  We are looking at some dates in early to mid-September to hold our clinic for first year officials.

Returning Officials

The procedure for certification clinics will be posted on the BC Hockey Clinic’s Website soon. All returning officials must attend one of these clinics which will be online this year.  If you are over 16, you can register for level 2 certification. Also, new this year, if you are under the age of 16, have been actively officiating for two years you can register as a level 2 official if you have been given permission by your association’s RIC.

BC Hockey will also be reducing the fees for this year for anyone who paid for a certification clinic last year. Details on this are below from BC Hockey.

There will be a reduced registration fee for next season, available to all officials that registered in 2020-2021. The 2021-2022 registration fees will be reduced as follows:

Level 1 = $13.00 (reg. fee $87.00)

Level 2 - $23.00 (reg. fee $97.00)

Level 3 = $24.00 (reg. fee $98.00)

This means a $74.00 discount on this season’s fees for all officials, applicable towards the level they are registering for in 2021-2022. Upon registration, all returning officials will be provided with the reduced fee based upon their registered status.

Also, all officials who attended a certification clinic in 2020, are now fully certified until December 31, 2021.

You must be certified each year through BC Hockey to officiate with SMHA.

The link below should answer any questions you have when BC Hockey has updated this section for this season.   Remember certification is the Responsibility of BC Hockey and if you have any questions/concerns, you should contact BC Hockey directly.
